Advice and Guidelines
Advice and guidance for parents
Introduction
Life is full of obstacles, from forgetting homework to disagreements with friends. A child equipped with "problem-solving" skills does not stand helpless waiting to be rescued; they analyze the situation and look for exits. This is one of the most vital life skills that protect children from excessive stress and anxiety.
Ways to Train Children in Problem Solving
- Stop Rescuing Them Constantly: When your child faces a minor problem, do not immediately intervene to provide the solution. Instead, say: "This is an annoying problem, how do you think we can solve it together?"
- The Three-Step Method: Teach your child this sequence: 1. Clearly identify the problem. 2. Brainstorm three possible solutions. 3. Choose the best solution and execute it.
- Open Brainstorming: Do not mock illogical solutions proposed by your child. Accept all ideas first, then calmly discuss the consequences of each so they can discover the best solution.
- Puzzles and Mazes: Games based on trial and error, like complex building toys and strategy video games, are excellent silent training for finding solutions.
- Thinking Aloud in Front of Them: Let your child see how you solve your own problems. If you lose your keys, say aloud: "I lost my keys. I will calm down first, then think about where I was last and look there step by step."
Conclusion
Teaching a child how to solve their own problems gives them a profound sense of competence and confidence. We cannot remove all obstacles from our children's paths, but we can equip them with the necessary tools to overcome them successfully.
