Advice and Guidelines
Advice and guidance for parents
Introduction
Some children experience "academic shock" when transitioning to a new educational stage (e.g., from primary to middle school) where subjects intensify and evaluation methods change. The child may express this sudden challenge through poor grades, crying, or school refusal. How can we support them?
Steps to Contain Academic Shock
- Emotional Support First: Do not scold the child for poor grades at the beginning of a new stage. Say: "I know this stage is difficult and different, and it's normal to feel pressured; we are here to help you."
- Accurately Identify the Problem: Sit with the child and ask: What is the most difficult part? Is it the teacher's speed? The volume of homework?
- Break Down Tasks and Adjust Study Methods: Old study methods might not work with new curricula. Teach them how to summarize long lessons into mind maps and break large assignments into smaller parts.
- Seek School Support: Do not hesitate to schedule a meeting with the school counselor or teachers to discuss the decline in your child's performance.
- Rebuild Confidence: Remind your child of their past successes and how they overcame difficulties before.
Conclusion
Academic shock is a temporary transitional phase and not evidence of a decline in the child's intelligence. With emotional support and correct academic guidance, the child will adapt to new challenges and regain their usual excellence.
